Shorter hospital stays, faster recovery
Dr. Procter prefers the minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic approach for bypass surgery, which result in smaller scars and less pain than open surgical procedures.
One study found that following laparoscopic gastric bypass, patients were able to leave the hospital after 2 days and return to work after 21 days.

Better quality-of-life
Clinical studies of laparoscopic bariatric and metabolic surgery patients found that they felt better after the procedure, and spent more time doing recreational and physical activities. They also benefited from enhanced productivity and economic opportunities, and had more self-confidence than they did prior to surgery.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

Improvement and in some cases resolution of comorbidities are the more notable benefits of sleeve gastrectomy, there are other advantages such as improvements in weight loss, cost-savings and a better quality of life.

Health conditions resolved or improved due to sleeve gastrectomy procedures:

Health Condition % of Gastric Sleeve Gastrectomy
Type 2 Diabetes Controlled 45-58%
High Blood Pressure Resolved 50%
High Cholesterol Improved* 77%
Obstructive Sleep Apnea Resolved 60%

Sleeve Gastrectomy clinical trial data

  • An analysis of 24 clinical studies with a follow up period of one to five years found that, following sleeve gastrectomy, patients experienced an average of 66 percent excess weight loss.
  • An analysis of 10 clinical studies found that, with a follow up period of one to five years, more than 70 percent of patients had improvement or remission of type 2 diabetes. Significant improvements were also seen in hypertension and hyperlipidemia, as well as in sleep apnea and joint pain.

Shorter hospital stays, faster recovery
The majority of sleeve gastrectomy procedures are performed using a minimally invasive laparoscopic technique resulting in smaller scars and less pain than open surgical procedures.

Duodenal Switch

Patients who have the BPD-DS procedure have seen significant weight loss, as well as improvement and in some cases resolution of obesity-related conditions like type 2 diabetes. Patients may also experience other advantages such cost-savings and a better quality of life.

BPD-DS Clinical Trial Data

  • In a clinical study of BPD-DS patients, 94% lost more than 70% of their excess weight at 1 year, 62% lost 75% of their excess weight at 3 years, and 31% lost 81% of their excess weight at 5 years.
  • Studies that show that the BPD-DS is the most effective surgery for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and improves type 2 diabetes before there is even any weight loss.
