What is the Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band?
|
| |
| The Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band, or "lap band" is a surgical procedure involving the placement of an inflatable cuff/band inserted by laparoscopic surgery on the uppermost part of the stomach. The band narrows and divides the stomach into two sections, like the shape of an hourglass. Attached to the band is a tube connected to an injection port which is placed just under the skin below your sternum. The band is inflated or deflated temporarily to decrease the overall size of the stomach, thereby providing an early feeling of satiety or fullness, which results in decreased food intake. Gradual weight loss is achieved with this overall reduction of food intake. |

HOW IT WORKS |
 |
A band I placed around the upper most part of the stomach separating the stomach into one small and one large part
The band can be adjusted to increase or decrease restriction using the port

 |
| |
| Why is Gastric Banding a Good Option? |
| Swedish Adjustable Gastric Banding has five main benefits over previous techniques: 1) There is no large incision to recover from. 2) There is only a minimal scar where the laparoscopic surgery takes place. 3) As a result of minimal scarring, the recovery time is dramatically reduced and the client experiences little or no discomfort. 4) It is not permanent because no sections of the stomach or intestines are removed, and therefore it can be revised at any time eliminating the possibility of any long-term complications. 5) The nature of the procedure allows for adjustments to be made according to your well-being at any time without any further surgery. |
| |
| Who is a Usual Candidate for Gastric Banding? |
Men or women who have a long history with obesity and are unable to obtain satisfactory results from traditional modes of weight loss such as diet and exercise are excellent candidates for this procedure. Your doctor will complete a pre-operative check-up to ensure that you are fit for the operation and that you do not suffer from any of the following:
-
Alcohol or drug abuse
-
Endocrine cause for obesity, such as thyroid malfunction
-
Severe psychological problems or mental illness

| Safety of the Procedure |
The Swedish Adjustable Gastric Banding procedure has been performed numerous times at the Blue Water Surgical Centre with no major complications. Because the procedure is performed laparoscopically, the risks of post-operative complications are dramatically reduced. Your doctor will be happy to answer any of your questions and concerns regarding the procedure and the management of the Gastric Band at any time during your decision making process as well as after the procedure.
|
| |
| Where Will the Surgery be Performed? |
The Swedish Adjustable Gastric Banding procedure will be performed at the Blue Water Surgical Centre ; a private surgical centre which is fully accredited by the CAAASF (Canadian Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities) and has the added benefit of providing the privacy and personal comfort that traditional hospital settings cannot offer.
|
| |
| Preparing for Surgery |
| Once you are scheduled for surgery, you will be given an information packet by your doctor. This package will remind you of items discussed in the consultation process, and give you preparation instructions for the operation. It will be important that in the weeks and months prior to surgery you establish healthy eating patterns and consume a well balanced diet. |
| |
| Anesthesia |
One of the most critical parts of your surgery is your anesthesia. In most centres in North America, anesthesia is provided either by an M.D. who is specialized in anesthesia or a nurse certified in anesthesia. At the Blue Water Surgical Centre , your anesthesia is only provided by a fully certified anesthesiologist M.D., F.R.C.S.C. We believe that this person is as critical to your safe outcome as is your surgeon. |
| |
| Day of Surgery |
Most Swedish Adjustable Gastric Banding procedures are performed under General-Complete anesthesia. You will remain comfortable and your physical status will always be monitored during the operation as well as during recovery. |
| |
| After Surgery |
Immediately after surgery you will be brought to the recovery area. It is a standard requirement that you recover in the recovery room for the same amount of time that you were under anesthesia. When you are concious, comfortable, and your vital signs are stable, we will get you up, offer you something to drink, dress you, and take you to the bathroom before you depart to go home. Post operative instructions will be given to you at the time of your discharge. This will provide you with additional information on how to care for yourself after surgery, including any other limitations to activities. You will also be given a 24-hour emergency phone number should a concern arise after normal office hours. |
| |
| Follow-Up Appointments |
After surgery you must undergo regular check-ups as an outpatient. Initially, these check-ups will be carried out monthly, but soon visits will become less frequent. The Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band will gradually be filled via the injection port during the first 18 months following surgery. During this period, your weight loss and level of well-being will be monitored. Once your weight has stabilized, check-ups will be necessary on an annual basis.
By nature, the Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band will cause you to eat less, feel less hunger and gradually lose your excess weight. This will lead to a healthier liefe style with less risk of obesity-related secondary diseases. However you will be encouraged to change your overall eating habits and begin a physician approved exercise program to receive lasting weight loss. |

| Patient Testimonials |
" My journey began meeting Dr. Kaila on January 5, 2005 with a free consultation at the Blue Water Surgical Centre about Lap Banding surgery. After many years of believing that it was going to be a 2 year wait for a major gastric bypass surgery; Dr. Kaila convinced me that I was a perfect candidate for the Lap Banding and this could be done in a couple of months. 10 days prior to my surgery date of February 25, 2005 I was on a strict pre-surgery diet of yogurt and water ONLY!!! And still I was unable to weigh myself on my bathroom scales (WOW). Within months and with the help and encouragement of the clinic staff, pounds started falling off. In words I can't tell you how I was feeling. I wasn't hungry and anticipating my next meal anymore; the Lap Band was doing its job. My visits to the clinic for a "fill" and "stepping on the scales" were something I looked forward to now. At times I was unrecognizable to the staff in reception with all the weight that I had lost, they always greeted me with a hug and felt like part of their family. 1½ years later I am down 149lbs with 32 to go. They say, "life begins at 40" and I was on the road of "life ending at 40" so I know I would not have been able to do this without Dr. Kaila, the surgeons, the Lap Band, and the staff at the Blue Water Surgical Centre .
